Iranian hackers gained access to documents from former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, Mr. Trump stated Saturday (Aug 10). Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Center also announced Friday (Aug 9) that an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps hacking group gained access to an email account from “a former senior advisor” to a current U.S. presidential campaign, then sent spearphishing emails to senior officials within that campaign. News outlets, including Politico and the New York Times, reported receiving internal campaign documents from an anonymous source. Although the Times published general details about the documents, it declined to comment on their contents in detail. Former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director Christopher Krebs warned audiences at the annual DEF CON hacking convention to expect further cyber attacks on presidential campaigns this year.
